When talking about sheds, most people only think about the kind of shed, the size and the materials it’s made out of. However, there are many ways you can use a garden shed if you just think about it for a while. Once you decide what you really would like to do with your shed, then you can really go out and get what will work best for you and your family.

Then you get to create the perfect landscape and look surrounding the shed so it doesn’t look drab out in the back yard. Planting the right shrubs, flowers or trees around the outdoor shed can lend beauty to something w think is nor so beautiful. Bringing your touch and eye to something so simple can really make a difference as you add to your yard and garden. Just don’t short change what you can do and open up your mind to the infinite possibilities for your yard. You will be glad you did as you enjoy your creations

What You Should Know About Post Caps & Finials

I am always amazed at what people talk about in relation to post caps and finials. So many do not understand what they are made for and how they work in relation to your yard and the overall look and feel in your outdoor spaces. Though the fall season may seen to be an odd time to discuss what is generally seen to be a spring project, it’s actually the perfect time to talk about these great fence and deck post protectors.

As the weather changes so does wood. It contracts in the cold and expands with the heat as wood is a porous material. With each season change the wood weakens somewhat so anything you can do to keep it strong against the elements is great. The caps that sit on the top of the post actually keep water and bugs from being able to get easy access to the post itself through the pores and tunnels that are natural in a cut or broken end of a post. By simply capping this up and creating a barrier from the elements you accomplish this well. If you would like to further the look, finials are made to be placed on top of the cap. So the post caps are to protect the wood post while the finial is decorative.

The Maple Tree

At the easternmost edge of my parents’ lawn is a magnificent sugar maple tree. This particular tree is set apart by its hulking size. It stands fifty feet tall, has a canopy seventy-five feet from branch tip to branch tip and the trunk is four feet in diameter. The bark is rough and craggy with deep crevices just perfect for fingers and toes to find a good grip, and so it is that the maple tree invites her climbers.

From age six to eighteen, most of my time was spent either in or under the maple tree. I remember the shape of my favorite branches, the texture and smell of the bark. Many happy hours were spent on my swing, until winter came that is. In the winter my swing was swallowed up by the snow. In spring, as the snow receded my swing became the perfect vantage point from which to spot eager crocuses. In summer the breeze while swinging was refreshing and in autumn the swing was the perfect way to launch myself into red, gold and brown crunchy maple leaves that smelled of sun, grass, dirt and new decay.

The inevitable loss of the maple tree will change more than the landscape; it will change the dynamics of “home.”

A Place for the Kids

This seems to be the week for stories about creative uses for storage sheds. Today, I just heard about how a family with three little boys transformed an old wooden shed on their property into a grand ol’ fortress!

Seems that the shed was unusable for storing anything of value because of a water drainage issue, but rather than tear it down when they bought a new vinyl shed, they simply added a few details, and let the kids have it!

Oh, to be a kid again!

Placing Planters as Accent Pieces with Outdoor Furniture

The greatest thing about decorating your outdoor space is the way you choose to accent your furniture pieces.  Some people like to stay consistent with the type of furniture and accents, i.e. all wood planters with wood furniture.  However, it may be fun to mix and match a bit.

Think about mixing natural elements to build the entire space.  If you have wrought iron furniture, get some wood and stone elements in the mix whether they are planters, window boxes, candle holders or patio flooring or decking.  There is such a variety of options these days to choose from for both garden and patio furniture.

Another growing trend is concrete work.  There are some fantastic concrete stains and stamps that can be done to enhance your outdoor space as well as birdbaths and planters that are beautifully done.  If you also have a shed, greenhouse, arbor or pergola, think about how to accent these outdoor structures with wind chimes, trellis’, flowers and planters and window boxes.

You will find this a fun and exciting way to add enjoyment to your yard.  Accents can be used to soften up hard edges of masculine up a very feminine yard or visa versa.  You can always place planters with lovely blooms as accent pieces around your outdoor furniture and bring the beauty of your garden to your patio and oh the smell…

Using an Arbor as a Yard Entry

An arbor can be a great addition to any yard as they can even provide an excellent entry point to your yard or garden.  By positioning your arbor as a welcoming arch into your home, your guests will feel special as they enter under your beautiful archway.  This really sets the tone for your entire yard and your home.  You know that old saying, “You only have one chance to make a good impression”?  With a beautiful arbor, you definitely will!

Arbors add a touch of elegance and extravagance to your outdoor space that no other outdoor structures can.  They say welcome to all who enter here.  A great arbor can also change the whole perception of not only your yard but also of your home.  A good perception of your home translates to a good perception of you.

Give everyone who enters the wonderful experience of a welcoming yard.  You might be surprised at the difference something as simple as an arbor can make in your life.  Opening up your heart to those who enter your home is always a good thing.

A greenhouse is a structure that normally has a glass or plastic roof and sometimes glass or plastic walls that cause the air to it heat up due to incoming solar radiation from the sun. This keeps the plants warm as well as other things inside the building.

Backyard greenhouses are a great deal of fun and a great value for your money. Most backyard greenhouse kits require no permanent foundation and can be set up quickly in your yard. Make sure you get a greenhouses kit that can be put together without the need to hire a contractor as this will both save you money and give your entire family a fun DYI project!

Greenhouses have vents to move fresh air in and around the inside of the greenhouse to facilitate healthy plants. Make sure you have the needed supplies and accessories to make your greenhouse experience a pleasant one.
