You wouldn’t think, growing up on a farm, that we would have greenhouse, much less two greenhouses. After all, most of what my family grew was cotton, wheat and sunflowers; yes, I said sunflowers! But none of these were grown in the greenhouses. The mini greenhouse was what my grandmother called a “starter” greenhouse and was were she planted seeds and would start the plants whether she would plant them in her garden around back or move them into the larger greenhouse.

That sometimes was a hard call and other times easy. But most of the time she would split the seedlings between the garden and the greenhouse and made sure if anything got to the garden plants she had backups in the greenhouse. I often wondered why she didn’t call the larger greenhouse the “back-up” greenhouse. Maybe it’s because what she really loved to do was grow orchids in that greenhouse and grow orchids she did. But I learned the value of having a small greenhouse to start plants from seed and I am so glad I paid attention!

<![endif]-->Not having room to grow the things you want to can be a problem. That is one reason you may want to take a look at the mini greenhouses. They can be placed on many different surfaces including patios, landings and decks, though you will need to make sure the area is level and can handle the weight of the mini greenhouse. This makes it easy to grow your favorite vegetables, herbs and flowers if you live in the city in an apartment, town home or condo.

If you have more room and want to have a little bit bigger greenhouse you can. There are several small greenhouses that are also portable and work in smaller areas than the typical greenhouse. These can be fastened down by using tie down kits but they do need to be placed on a level surface. If you get the right sized metal racks for potted plants and a rod for hanging plants you will be amazed at how many plants you will be able to place in this small greenhouse.

<![endif]-->

When looking for a greenhouse it is advisable to see how much space, with adequate sunlight, that you can contribute to putting into a growing house. For those who only have minimal space or no yard at all and would still like to have a way to grow a few things with, you can invest in a wonderful mini greenhouse that can fit on a porch or balcony. For those who do have ample room and sunlight, a home greenhouse is a great choice for you.

In today’s climate of rising grocery prices people are looking for ways to consolidate and conserve for the sake of their pocket book. Though greenhouses do take an upfront investment, over time they not only contribute to helping with your expenses but also to your over health if you choose to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs organically. The lifetime of savings in regard to your health expenses by eating properly might far outweigh the savings on food alone. The bonus is that its not just your health; it’s your families as well.

In my backyard, among my hydrangeas and sunflowers sits my greenhouse. I do not know what I would do without it. It has truly been a lifesaver throughout many years; not only for my plants, but for me as well. It is a small greenhouse, no bigger than your typical gardening shed, but the work it does is huge.

In the winter, I put my plants in there to keep them from the certain death they would incur when the frost hits. It is so handy to have a place specifically for my plants to go that is the perfect environment for them to continue to grow and flourish. Not only is it useful in the winter but also is a great necessity year round.

I use my greenhouse year round, including the summer. My fruits and vegetables thrive in the moist humidity it provides. Can you imagine walking out your back door and picking fresh tomatoes and strawberries? It is really quite a luxury that I enjoy. A greenhouse is a must for a garden enthusiast; I know my life would be quite different if I did not have mine.
