Gardening in the City

Just because you rent an apartment in the city, or don’t have a yard doesn’t mean you can’t reap the benefits of, or enjoy growing your own garden.  Whether you want to plant, flowers, veggies, or even fruit – a bountiful, healthy garden is not out of reach.  Here are several tips to get you started!

Now, if you’re looking for something low-maintenance in the way of veggies, try one of the latest trends in home gardening, the tomato tree.  Tomatoes are great for making soups, sauces, salsa and salad toppers.  And, the tomato tree produces a crop year round!  Keep it indoors or out.  It also adds a bit of color to your décor.  You can also grow a simple herb garden.  Herbs are relatively maintenance free and can sit in any windowsill to grow.

If you want something a little more challenging, and have some patio space, there are several potted flowers, fruits and veggies you can grow right outside your door.  Blackberries are a great, low-maintenance summer fruit that will flourish in a pot.  Marigolds and Violets are easy flowers, and also really benefit the plants that grow around them by attracting pollinating bees.  Carrots also grow well in a long trough, and require very little maintenance.

And, if you want even more of a challenge, you can purchase a garden tier.  They are tiered planting boxes that are typically made of wood or brick, in a space-saving design.  They offer more space and soil depth to try planting anything you want.  For first time veggie gardeners, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans and peas are great – but keep in mind, they are vines, and will need some trellis support.  Fruit such as blackberries, strawberries and melons are very easy to grow.  And flowers such as daylilies, roses, black-eyed Susans, and African violets will flourish.  Lamb’s Ear is a great groundcover, as well.

A diverse, rewarding garden is never out of reach, regardless of whether or not you even have a yard.  Happy planting!
