In case of tragedies and disasters, volunteer workers and local government officials may not be able to get in touch with you immediately. Some may take hours and even few days before they could gain access to get to you. You always need to be prepared in case of emergencies. You can do this for your family’s safety and security especially if you have with you children, older adults and/or people with disabilities. When emergency strikes, you may not be able to find time anymore to shop or buy necessities, or even if you have time, you still won’t be able to do things because roads are closed, whole area is still in flood, etc.
We can really not say when disasters will happen because some are natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, strong typhoon, tornadoes, and many others. With the current technology that we have now, it is not impossible to detect these disasters but almost often, like in the case of strong earthquakes and hurricanes, it still cannot be predicted.
No matter what disasters will go your way, it is best to be always prepared. The three most important things during disaster are to update yourself with the news, be prepared and try your best to move on during and after the disaster.
Most disasters happen without warning, when this happens, the first thing to do is do not panic. Sometimes when you panic, you tend to lose concentration about the things that you should do. This may also cause the children to panic if they see that their parents are in great fear. You should also have an emergency kit in the home for minor injuries. This kit should also include flash lights and batteries in case of electricity lost. Make an emergency plan and make sure that everyone in the house is knowledgeable about this plan including the children. As much as possible, make it simple and practice it every so often so children will get familiarize with what to do. Keep emergency phone numbers handy so you can call for help right away.
