I am always amazed at what people talk about in relation to post caps and finials. So many do not understand what they are made for and how they work in relation to your yard and the overall look and feel in your outdoor spaces. Though the fall season may seen to be an odd time to discuss what is generally seen to be a spring project, it’s actually the perfect time to talk about these great fence and deck post protectors.

As the weather changes so does wood. It contracts in the cold and expands with the heat as wood is a porous material. With each season change the wood weakens somewhat so anything you can do to keep it strong against the elements is great. The caps that sit on the top of the post actually keep water and bugs from being able to get easy access to the post itself through the pores and tunnels that are natural in a cut or broken end of a post. By simply capping this up and creating a barrier from the elements you accomplish this well. If you would like to further the look, finials are made to be placed on top of the cap. So the post caps are to protect the wood post while the finial is decorative.

I love stores that have a lot of variety around one theme.  Since I love gardening and being outside as well as outdoor living spaces, I was very excited to find an online store that caters to everything outdoors from large items like sheds and greenhouses to smaller items like planters and outdoor furniture and even fences, post caps and finials.  I have been watching the store for several months and finally called the service number to ask a few questions for the blog.  I found out that they are adding to the store over the winter to include patio furniture, more garden accessories, some birding accessories and metal carports and garages as they want to be a total outdoor product and structures store.

I let them know that I was going to come back to the store on an ongoing basis to see what all they have added.  I was very pleased with how helpful they were and the staff was wonderful and welcoming.  I have bookmarked the site and will be going back to BevoWorks.com to shop more often.

For a look that’s a bit different, consider a lattice fence out of rather than regular slat fencing. A lattice fence made out of cedar is perfect for areas where you want blooming vines and flowers to climb, as the lattice gives them something to hold onto.  Some of these plants will really take off and grow to great heights if up against a wall.

If you live in warmer climates, surround your carport with lattice or put it up between you and your neighbor, and let jasmine, bougainvillea, or any climbing plant create a year-round living privacy screen for your home.  Combining a lattice fence with trellises can make a wonderful combination.

Decorative fencing, such as picket or other usually waist-high border fences, is mostly decorative, with a secondary intent of keeping pets or children within, or out of, a given outdoor space. It is most often used around landscaping at the fronts of homes and other buildings. This fence type often has widely spaced uprights (in picket fencing these are the pickets), to limit physical access but not visual access. It is normally white or light colored, or is ornate wrought iron. Gates are decorative, and easily opened.

Privacy fences are often over six feet in height, are solid (not see through), and are often topped with decorative panels of lattice. Its primary intent is to completely limit visual access, and is often used around back yards and other private spaces. Its secondary intent is as a security fence, to prevent unauthorized entrance. Gates are lockable and functional.

Picket fences are a well known style of decorative landscape fencing, meant to enhance a flower garden and small lawn. They are best suited to smaller yards due to their smaller scale, and there are many designs to choose from. Another type, low decorative metal fences, usually set on top of a low masonry base, or strung from footing to footing, are also suited to small residential use.

Solid panel fences are appropriate for any application, depending on their height. Lower ones, sometimes as low as a foot or two, can be used as decorative landscaping borders, waist height ones to define public spaces (such as a front yard or patio), and tall ones are ideal privacy fences.

Chain or other non-decorative metal fencing is most often purely functional, intended as a security fence. It is rarely used in a decorative way due to its simple appearance and strong association with industrial or security purposes. It is unsuited to residential settings for this reason, except for use in pet enclosures inside attractively fenced yards.
