Buying Food Locally Is Better For Your Health And Better For Your Neighbors

Buying Food Locally is good for everyone. Think about it, if everyone bought locally where available, there would be very little need for the import/export of “foreign” foods.

Foreign foods? What do you mean by foreign? Anything that is not grown close to home, the closer the better, is foreign. Consider most of the produce found in the “local” grocery store. If you take the time to learn and read the code stamps, you will see that much of this food comes from quite far away, and may be chemically treated or altered. This also involves unknown growing conditions, packing, and shipping. Packing and shipping involves time.

How often have you picked out a head of lettuce for example at the grocery store, only to get home and find much of it unusable? Just how long has it been sitting on the shelf? Let’s face it, most often, most of us are not going to trek all the way back to the store to return it. But boy is it aggravating.

When you buy vegetables, fruit, eggs, cheese, and even meat locally, you can usually be certain as to its freshness and quality. Most farmers will assure you that each item has been harvested today. The flavor and quality of your food will generally be a testimony to this fact.

The best part of buying food locally is that it gives the opportunity to visit and observe where the food is grown, cared for, and harvested. Many proud farmers are happy to have people visit. In fact many of these same individuals sell their harvest right on the farm where it has been grown.

Even the bees know that local is best. Any serious honey fan knows that the best honey, with best healing properties, comes from your own back yard. Bees that live off of the nectar of orange blossoms will produce orange blossom honey. Those that thrive on wild flowers will produce wild flower honey. Even they are aware that what is found locally is the best.

Remember also, when you buy food locally, you also are supporting your own community. What could be better than getting the freshness food, without chemicals, from your own neighborhood? Buying food locally is definitely the best way to go.
