I have been reading some books from the time period of World War II and I have realized something; entertainment and advertising have become ridiculously sex oriented. In the time before World War II, people would have never seen a woman in very skimpy clothing used to advertise something as unrelated as cigarettes or even jeans.

Some people don’t mind these changes but it continues to make women second class citizens. Sex had been used to sell products before our now but it was just not as overly visual even though the aspect was still there. Before we know it the advertisements will get worse.

In my opinion, this change is not something to be proud of. However, it is not something worth getting overly upset over either. It is just the way it is and since there is no pressure on companies to make the changes they will continue to use sex oriented methods to sell their products. They do it because it works and there is not much that we can do about that.

Composting kitchen waste is an easy way to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.  Meat and animal products still need to be disposed of the rubbish bin.  Eggshells, rinds, peelings, coffee and tea grounds can all be put in the compost bin outdoors.  That reduces household waste by a great volume.  I once heard that potato peels from fast food French fries are the main ingredient in most landfills.  Those potato peelings are 100% compostable.

Compost happens quickly.  Recognizable kitchen waste becomes garden soil in a short period of time.  I find it helpful to cut all the pieces small so that insects and soil microbes can make fast work of the degradation process. Turning the compost frequently speeds the process along as well.  The reward is two-fold.  The first reward is the decrease in the amount of garbage that a household generates.  The second is what gardeners call “black gold.”  The compost is a wonderful garden soil amendment that is of no more cost than groceries. Any American family can make their own compost.

Buying bottled water has got to be one of the most wasteful things that human beings have ever done. The whole concept of bottled water is that it is easier to go to the store and buy it and bring it home than it is to just use the sink at your home. Some people say they prefer bottled water because is cleaner. However, there is little and no proof that they “purify” the water. We just take their word for it.

People who say that they get bottled water because it is more convenient are simply not thinking because they have to spend extra money to by the bottled water when they already spend money in the form of taxes to make sure the water in their sink is clean. They say that it is easier to transport but a water bottle that can be reused over again makes more sense because you don’t have to pay every single time you fill it up.

Finally there is the matter of the pollution. A huge amount of people in the world drink bottled water and sadly most of those people do not recycle. That means that millions and millions of plastic bottles go straight to the landfill. That is maybe the biggest waste of all.

If you are looking for planters to use on your patio, deck, sunroom or home; wood or cedar planters are a great way to go.  I have found that cedar planters are an amazing natural material that holds up much better than other natural woods. These planters are not only durable, but are truly beautiful as well and you can get them in custom sizes if the 15” x 15” x 15 ¾” is not big enough.  I also love the choice of a vertical or diagonal side to mix it up a bit.

These wood planters are heavy enough to stay in one place during most extreme weather and won’t blow away like plastic, chip like concrete, crack like pottery or rust like metal planters eventually will.  These wonderful planters can be treated and sealed to maintain their natural look and beauty or painted or stained to match your chosen décor.  This gives you the flexibility to use them in just about any outdoor or indoor living space where you want to enjoy your favorite plant and blooms.  I love the versatility of these planters and the fact that they are all natural.  Go green!
